Title: Top Cats, Meet Nala...

Crystal - January 27, 2007 04:33 PM (GMT)
Well, we didn't go for long with five cats...meet kitty number six (she's a keeper this time) - Nala.

This is the only picture I've gotten of her so far, I need to recharge my digital camera batteries.

I went to the Animal Protection League this past Wednesday with my sister, who was looking to get a cat. We honestly spent about two hours there looking, going from hut to hut and meeting the cats there. They were all cute, but there was this one long-haired calico that I couldn't stop going to - and she'd sit there at the front of her hut with her head turned to the side, watching me while I'd walk around, then go crazy and get all lovey when I'd come back over and pet her. Her head is this enormous fluffy thing and her body is so tiny - aww, I just fell in love.

My sister finally decided on a cat and we took her tag up to the front to adopt her. We were talking about the calico while we were up there and the girl goes, "you know, it's buy one get one free...." We ended up spending another hour there debating what to do...and I finally just said screw it, I'm taking her home. The one thing that was bothering me was that she had been dropped off there because her previous owners said she wouldn't use the litter box. I spoke to a couple different workers there about it and they said she'd never had a problem there, and she had come from a multi-cat household so it probably wasn't clean enough or she wanted her own or something. They also told me when she was brought in, they found she had a hernia (I guess it's common after they get spayed) - so I wonder if that was the issue (associating pain with the box). I was worried because I'm renting from my dad (who doesn't allow animals) and I don't want to ruin his liking for my cats. And we don't have much room for a second litter box if she needed one, I was debating where I'd put it. But honestly, there were too many factors that could cause her not to use the box that the old owners didn't even try to fix - so I got her.

She's the sweetest, most beautiful little cat...she's settling into our house so well. She's completely fine with the other kitties, they seem to be fine with her, and she's had no problem with the litter box. I had a second one set up outside the bathroom (where we keep ours) and she didn't even use it - she just walked by it and used the one all the other cats use. I'll be taking more pictures later - Erik doesn't know yet, we have a Live Journal account we update and "talk" to one another with - but he's been traveling so I know he hasn't read that much of it yet. He's going to love her, though, she's such a great little kitty.

ETA: Nala is 3 years old.

lol, exactly. I had to pay $30 for the kitty disease testing so I could introduce her to the house (since she came from a multi-cat household I figured she was fine, but it never hurts to check)...aaaand we get our first vet visit free if we go to one of the vets they use. How could pass that up?! :rotfl:

Actually, I think Nala makes new kitty #4 this week... :kittyluv: :kittyluv: :kittyluv: :kittyluv:

And here's me, sitting looking at the Freecycle ads for cats/kittens and wishing...

But the last time I tried, Gussy and the kitten just fought all night, so I don't think he's in favor of any new babies (or maybe just not a boy).

Temptations... :luv2:

Oh, well I was just counting the kitties that people are keeping. Janice fosters until they go to forever homes. :luv2:

Sorry, off topic. Anyhoo, now I'm really wanting another kitty!! But I went through enough with Sasha and Marley. We have a pretty big apartment, infact, this is the largest I've ever lived in, but still!!

Melanie - January 27, 2007 11:43 PM (GMT)
Yep, I've got kitten fever too. But we swore we would NOT get another til we lived somewhere else, and we are going to stick to that! Of course, we are planning on moving pretty soon....... ;)

By the way, Crystal ... I love the name Nala for a kitty! :kittyluv:

When I adopted Tabby, the shelter people told me she had a hernia that they fixed when she was spayed. Did the APL fix Nala's hernia?

Yup, just recently - her scar is still healing. She was brought to them already being spayed and they found she had a hernia, so they fixed her up. She seems to be doing fine now.

However, she is sneezing a lot - I'm making a vet appointment first thing on Monday to get her looked at.

Congradulations of the new addition to the family, she is a cutie.

Nala's probably caught a little "kennel" cold.
When we adopted Eleanor she had a slight URI from being at PetSmart.

7-10 days of antibotic she was good as new :)

How is Nala doing?

Crystal - February 3, 2007 05:56 PM (GMT)
I've been meaning to come update, this is the first time I've been on the site in a few days. My life is freaking busy!

She's doing well - we went to the vet last week and they confirmed she had a shelter cold. My sister's cat also has one. They're on antibiotics twice a day until the bottle runs out, and I've seen huge improvements. Nala would hide in the bedroom and sleep all day - now she's back out, interacting with the other cats and people who come over, where she belongs. She's a little lovey cat and loves to meet new people - I can't wait for Erik to meet her.

I'll be trying to get more pictures of her today to add her to my siggy now that she's out and about.

Congradulations! she is a beauty, and it help that they all got along right away.
