Title: Tell us about your first kitty
Allie - February 6, 2007 10:02 PM (GMT)
Hi all I was looking thru some old photos from when I was a kid. I found one from June 1979...when I got my first kitty cat.
I was 7 years old boy do I feel old now when I got my first kitten, Tibby. He was about 3 months old when we brought him home from my grandmother's neighbors, their cat had 4 kittens all the same looking. He was orange traditional tabby marking with white. :luv2: He was a very well behaved kitty. I could dress him up in doll clothes and do whatever to him. :luv2: Poor thing :lmao: As young cat he was an outdoor cat without a doubt, he brought home 2 dead squirrels once. :yuck: Another time he disappeared for a week. He was fixed, so I dunno what he was up to?
He was a major lap cat as he got older.
At the age of 13 we had to put him to sleep, he lost his leg functions & his mind... it seemed like he may have had a stroke...I was 20 years old. We had gotten Rocky(who is 16 yrs now) the year before and he was very active...I think Rocky trying to play with Tibby so roughly may have given him the stroke.
:(

Our family always had dogs - I had friends with cats and thought they were great and no matter how many times I begged the parents, still no kitties for me...
Until one day - it was just after I'd started my first job at 16. I was the first to arrive home, and I was just relaxing on the couch with a snack when my mum got back. I turned round to say hi - and noticed she was holding what looked like a ball of fluff with huge green eyes.
On closer inspection - it turned out to be a kitten (but there was definitely more fluff than cat there!). A friend of my mum's had been feeding her as a stray (the kitten, not my mum...), and her cats were very territorial and didn't take kindly to the newcomer. The vet estimated she was about 6 months old - and we later found out she was completely blind in both eyes (which went a long way towards explaining why she kept walking into things).
Ozzy's 12 now, still living with the parents - and still more fluff than cat! :luv2:

Dixie was my first kitty. I just happened to be walking by Petco, and decided to check out the cats. The marks on Dixie's face caught my attention-I HAD TO GET HER! She was very affectionate from the second she went into my hands. That's how I got my first kitty :)
I'm sad to see that Dixie had to go so soon, but I will see her again someday.
RIP Dixie :lilangel:

I love reading "first kitty" stories! I don't really have one, though - Tabby was my first kitty. :luv1: I was always a dog person. Now that I have had the honor of being loved by two kitties, I will never go back. :luv1:

Well, I always consider my first kitty my mom's first as well. His name was Sissy (they thought he was a she until "she" went to be spayed and came home neutered instead! :rotfl: ). He was 17 years old when I was born and had been with my mom since she was a child. He quickly became my constant companion and protector. My mom said when I was a baby he wouldn't let very many people near me. My mom's mom HATED how close he got to me...but then she didn't like cats and my mom knew he and I were fine together.
He died when I was 4, so he lived to be 21. Of course I don't have a lot of memories of him, but I have a few. I remember he used to go outside with me and one day we were in the front yard with my mom several feet away when a huge dog came running at me. Well, Sissy got in between us and attacked the dog (which must have outweighed him by 70 pounds at least) and the dog ran off! And I remember waking up and Sissy being by my feet.
I also remember the day he died and how sad both my mom and I were. My mom's teenage years were hell and Sissy was, in many ways, the only happiness in her life growing up, so losing him really hurt her. And for me he was my first best friend. :(

Mellie and Rocket were my first two kitties. They were both adopted together October 2004. Mellie started talking to me as soon as I walked into the cat room at the shelter, and I just couldn't say no. I had to wait a few more days for Rocket to clear intake and get neutered. I was considering another cat, a female brown tabby at Petsmart, but once I met Rocket he decided it for me. ;)
A picture of Mellie her first night at her new home is in the kitty spotlight thread for this week. :)

My very first Kitty I can not remember, but his name was newfy, he was very fluffy and gray.
The first Kitty I remember having would be Grizly (an all white cat that my mom meant to name polar but she got her bears mixed up . lol :lmao: )
He was great! we only had him for a year though when I was 9, he was an outdoor cat, that got run over at the end of my drive way. I was the unlucky one to find him when i went to catch my bus in the morning for school :bawling: It was that moment that I decided that when I was old enough to have my own cats they would be indoors only, or on a leash and supervised while out doors. I have been scared for life.
I do remember this little guy well though, he use to sleep with me everynight. and although young he still brought home mice to show me!

I had always wanted a dog. I knew dogs were very loyal and would be by your side at all times so I had always thought that a dog is what I needed. My parents often said "No." because we were renting our home and our landlord wouldn't allow it.
When I found out we were going to move and own our own house I was back on asking for a dog. For some reason I was still getting the dreadful "No." and because I wanted to spend time with dogs I started volunteering at CCHS. This still didn't help my depression though because I still had to leave them behind, and especially when I would return and find the dog I befriended gone because they got adopted out.
Months went by and my depression was getting worse, then it happened, my sister brought in her cat. Now, at the time I hated cats, I was afraid of them. Her name was Mystik and she was adopted from CCHS she was known as Que there. Mystik strutted out of her little pet carrier that she was brought in and rubbed up against my leg. My sister informed me that she'd be sticking around for awhile so I might as well get used to her.
Oddly enough I did. I treated Mystik like she was my best friend, because she was. Whenever I came home I would be greeted by that sweet little tabby face staring up at me. She protected me at night, wouldn't let anyone enter my room while I was asleep, not even my mom.
I had Mystik for 3 months, my sister did the most horrible thing by coming home and taking her back. I couldn't stop crying. I was back in my depression state it was the worst day of my life the day that Mystik left.

My first cat was Blackie. He showed up on our doorstep when I was 8 years old. My Mom had always had her cat named Holly, but she only liked my Mom :lmao: I loved Blackie so very much. There has never been another like him.
After having him, I was hooked. I had to have more :lmao: We lived up in the foothills and there were SO many feral cats that had obviously overpopulated. I began to feed them and very pateintly domesticate many of them. They would have babies and I would look after them and eventually we would adopt most of them and spay/nueter all that we could. I learned so much about cats from having them my entire life. About illnesses, ect. And alot of it was learned the hard way.

My/our first kitty was Tinkerbell. Erik grew up with dogs and I had never had a cat/dog growing up because my dad doesn't like animals. The closest I ever came to a "real" pet was a turtle, lol!
