Title: Giving medication to your cat
SonyaMarie - March 27, 2007 05:32 PM (GMT)
I was just wondering if the way I have been giving Lilly her pill is right. I tried crushing them and putting it in wet food but she ate around the pill, so I just would open her mouth and put the pill in the back of her mouth. Sometimes it could fall out but I would make sure.
Just wondering if they can swallow pills like humans do?
Jennifer - March 27, 2007 05:56 PM (GMT)
Yep, they can swallow them just like humans. Just be sure to put it as far back in her throat as possible. Sometimes they can be sneaky and it will fall besided their tongue, then they are able to spit t out. You can usually tell if that happens because her tongue will be moving all around.
My Caleb takes pills twice a day for his Thyroid and is pretty good at it. Our late Eskie however would catch them in the side of his mouth EVERY time :rotfl:
Good luck, you'll get the hang of it :)

I had to give Lucifer worm pills once ... What i was told by my vet is that you stick it as far back as you can into their mouth then hold their mouth shut, massage their throat until you see them swallow ... They may dislike you for a little while right after but I am sure they will get use to it. or at least Lilly will get all better because of it

Yep, exactly what Jackie said!
When Abbey was on antibiotics after her spay, she was a tricky little minx to pill! I had to hold her down and force feed her treats. Then after a couple treats, in went the pill, followed by more treats. It was the only way she would take it! :coocoo:

Dylan thankfully has only ever had worming tablets which the vet is kinda enough to give to him. He just carefully opens his mouth and drops it to back of his throat. I totally do not have the guts to do that! LOL! As gentle as my boy is, I am a complete wimp, and I would worry about hurting him :(

I got it down to a fine art when Motley was poorly and on 3 pills a day.....
I'd secure her under one arm then put one hand over the top of her nose and squeeze the corners of her mouth slightly till it popped open - then throw the pill as far back in her throat as it would go, then hold her mouth closed with her head tilting up, gently stroking her throat for a while 'til she swallowed.
A few times the pill would slip under her tongue or she'd hold it in the side of her mouth (like Jen's Eskie!) - I'd find a soggy pill on the floor, and poor ol' Motley would be foaming at the mouth until the taste went away - those things must have tasted NASTY!
Sounds like you're doing it just fine - it gets easier with practice too!
Edited to add this great little link I just found -

:pullhair: Speaking of pills...we came out out to Scotts parents house tonight and well Lilly still had all her pills left from when I left. Anyways, thats another reason why I wanted to come out... All evening, Scott and I tried to give her meds to her. I have soo many claw marks all over me and she clawed me soo bad I bled alot. Its only because I would take her head and open her mouth and put the pill in and she would run away and the pill would come out. Finally Scott wrapped her in a blanket and wrapped her paws in it too.. and I got it in and she swallowed it.... I noticed tonight, that the muscus was still coming from her anus. We were talking and maybe because she is overweight, she is not able to clean herself properly down there? :wha:
Jennifer - March 28, 2007 02:07 AM (GMT)
Did you guys ask the vet about the mucus last time you went???? If so, did he/she have any ideas what it is???
Lisa - March 28, 2007 02:12 AM (GMT)
Sonya, even if she cannot clean herself, she should not have mucus coming from her anus. I really don't want to speculate as to what it could be, because I'm not a vet. :) But I do know it's probably not normal.
As for getting scratched, I always found it was easier to give Tabby her meds when her nails were clipped short.
SonyaMarie - March 28, 2007 02:16 AM (GMT)
No because she didnt have it last time. I just noticed it when giving her the meds..its not alot... I have been just checking her everyday when Im here. Scott is a pharmacy technician and he thinks it might be yeast from the meds as some ppl get yeast infections when taking antibotics,,, as said before, maybe I am being too over predicting with this and over analizing things.... Before she had that infection, I wouldnt check her privates constantlly like I am now.

Lisa, thats another thing I was wondering, can you buy cat clippers? because Lillys nails are like razor blades... Molly never uses her nails only when shes mad and will go and scratch the couch :lmao: when she doesnt get her own way.
Lisa - March 28, 2007 02:22 AM (GMT)
Yes, you can buy nail clippers. And vets and grooming places can do it for you, too. Do you know how to do it? Gently squeeze her paws and the nails will come out. Clip them in the white area - don't cut the pink part or she'll bleed. :(
And actually, I was thinking along the lines of Scott - a yeast infection from the antibiotics. My only question is, I thought his parents weren't giving them to her? You have to be on antibiotics regularly to get a yeast infection from them.

Claw Clippers: those are the type of claw clippers I use.

Sonya, just to be on the safe side, I would take her in before you leave. The flight will add stress and you want to make sure she's in perfect health before. Finding a vet over there would be pretty hard, I imagine, unless you already know of one.
Maybe you could get the antibiotics in liquid form and that way you could just mix them in w/ her food?? :wha: That doesn't always prove successful that she will still eat the food with it in it, but it's worth a try since you're having a tough time with the pills. Like I said, some kitties, my Eskie being one of them, do not take pills easily, and I know how hard and frustrating it can be.
Lisa - March 28, 2007 02:48 AM (GMT)
What antibiotic is it, Sonya? I can't remember what you said. Clindamycin?? If so, they definitely have it in a liquid. You can just squirt that in the side of her mouth real quick, too.
SonyaMarie - March 28, 2007 07:10 PM (GMT)
The med is Clavamox. Lisa, we have only been gone from here for 2 days and I gave her a pill the morning I left, so she went a day and half without a pill but in one month this is her second time on the meds, so thats why we are thinking, too much yeast. I called the vet today and she said she couldnt tell me over the phone that I would have to bring her in, so I am going to make an apointment before we leave. Im going to also buy clippers but it is going to be hard as I know she will put up a fight.

When I clipped Motley's claws, I waited til she was all relaxed and stretched out by the heater - it worked a treat!
