Title: rag dolls?
FiddlerSue - April 25, 2007 03:47 AM (GMT)
A friend thought I should get a rag doll cat. Can you recommend books or web site about rag doll cats? I'd like to find out more about them. Thanks....

Why Ragdoll as opposed to another breed or a rescue? Just curious...

Like I said, a friend suggested. I don't know much about breeds. What are rag dolls? Can you recommend a site where I can find out more about them?

The breed is called Ragdolls, not rag dolls. I have 3 of them myself, as well as several Ragamuffins, which are a different, but similar breed. Here's some information about them:

Thanks Taxnkats! Now there's some good information for a girl trying to decide on a cat. If I wanted a Ragdoll, how do I go about finding one? I called the Humane Society and they don't have any.

Ragdolls are a pedigreed cat, so you'd have to locate a breeder. Most "ragdolls" in shelters aren't really ragdolls, but just long haired pointed cats. But rescue cats are wonderful, regardless of if they are pedigreed or not!

There is some Ragdoll kittens at our LPS. $999.99 plus taxes...we have a discount card so we don't pay the taxes but GeeesH!! $1000 for a cat?!?
:luv2: They were all beautiful & playful. If I saw one at a shelter I would adopt it.

Very few end up in shelters; there are Ragdoll Rescue groups however.

Petstores are the WORST place to get cats from, GOOD breeders do NOT sell kittens to petstores. Also, pet stores do tend to over price big time. Pet quality Ragdolls should not be going for $1000...generally it's $500 - $800 depending on the breeder...

Oh cripes. When you said "I found one" I thought you meant that you'd found a pet store that sells them. And JJ is very right - it is NOT GOOD to support any breeder who sells to pet stores. They are most likely kitty mill people, don't care for their animals properly, and are just trying to make a profit. There's a good chance you'll get a sickly animal with no vet care or socialization that isn't even pedigreed because the breeder was shady.
But anyway - that site was for a breeder, and they look legit. But it's always a good idea to contact them and ask them all the right questions. I've seen better breeder sites that give you more info upfront, but...meh.

Hey guys,
Did FiddleSue found her Ragdoll?
We will be having a Retire Breeder available for the cost of castration.

I think I read somewhere that there are purebred rescue websites... that could be another option. Maybe do a search for them?
