Title: Sasha to the vet!

Elizabeth - April 26, 2007 12:28 PM (GMT)
She has her behavioral consultation today. :) I must say, things have gotten better around here, but it seemed that way last time, too... It got "quiet" minus a few chasings. But then BOOM, the fighting started again. SO, she's going anyway.

For those who might not know, or remember, quick refresher:

Sasha does not particularly like Marley. She has always chased him around, causing him to scream bloody murder. Well, sometimes BIG cat fights erupt, where the fur is flying, claws & teeth bared, and scratch and bite wounds abound. The first time I made the mistake of grabbing Marley and got deeply clawed up. :(

Well, recently, the fights were at least twice a day and over a 3-day span. I had to separate them. I hated keeping Marley by himself, as he is a needy cat. :bawling: But so far, things are okay again with the second addition of a cat tree.

I'll post the update when we get back.

I'm sending you happy thoughts - I hope this helps.

OK! The consultation went very well, I thought. :) She's going to start Sasha on Prozac instead of waiting, since I've done most of the recommended steps with no success. She gave me an outline of our meeting, plus numerous handouts on posturing, enrichment, etc. This place is awesome and so worth the money!

The recommendations are more places for Sasha to curl up in, like baskets, boxes, etc. Another litter box with an open top, more play time, and Prozac. Oh, and Feliway spray.

:) Wish us luck!!

Good news :jump: :jump:
Glad you're pleased with the visit and hopefully the recommendations will make a difference.
  for all!

Awesome, more progress!! :jump:

Elizabeth - April 26, 2007 07:05 PM (GMT)
I picked up Sasha's prescription from Wal Mart. I also bought 2 more little basket thingies for them to lay in and some cheap .20 felt mats from the craft section to line the bottom with. :)

Sounds all good!!

David - April 26, 2007 09:01 PM (GMT)
:jump: Sounds great! :)

Sasha has been on Prozac for a couple hours. So far no serious side effects (like an allergy). I hope it works! I know it can take up to 3 weeks. AND, I hope no negative side effects develop.

Lisa - April 26, 2007 10:49 PM (GMT)
Sounds great, Liz!

I'm not that familiar with Prozac in cats. Did the vet tell you what to watch for?

It sounds like you found a great place to take care of your babies!

Melanie - April 26, 2007 10:53 PM (GMT)
I'm glad to hear that you and Sasha are on the road to recovery! :jump: So kitties take human prozac? When you said prozac at first, I thought you just meant a cat anti-depressant.

Not to make light, but was the prescription in your name or hers? :giggle:

Lisa - April 26, 2007 10:59 PM (GMT)
Mel, I'm obviously not Liz ;) But I think the prescription goes in the kitty's name. :)

Jessica - April 26, 2007 11:39 PM (GMT)
Ours did for Eddie - with my last name. :giggle: I kept the pill bottle from his pills because it looked cute. :duh:

 Elizabeth!!!

You're SUCH a great fur-mom!!! :jump:

You mentioned another cat box....how many did you have originally? I have heard that the general rule is one box/cat. We've always had multiple cats and boxes; with this group they are large kitties and have two huge Sterilite storage boxes.

Would there be a possibility that Sasha wasn't spayed completely? :wha:

Elizabeth - April 27, 2007 01:38 PM (GMT)
Gaby, we have 2 boxes with 3 cats, so we definitley need another! And I hope she was spayed all the way! I took her at 6 months to have her woman hood removed!! :rotfl: Could they have messed up?? It was kinda crappy vet...

Mel, it is people Prozac. I give her 1/4 a tablet a day. I decrease to 1/8 if she starts getting groggy, sluggish and not eating. They put the prescription under "Sasha the CAT Thomas." :lmao:

Melanie - April 27, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)
Cute! :rotfl:

She's actually on a generic Prozac, fluoxetine.

Lisa - April 27, 2007 05:57 PM (GMT)
That's really cute. :luv1:

Elizabeth, I'm so jealous of you and your vet! I want one like that! I'm actually very happy for you.user posted image

Is the Prozac supposed to curb Sasha's aggressiveness? Or is it to make her stop being scared of Marley so she doesn't run from him?

I'm having a similar situation, and I want som infor before I go to the vet.

Thanks everyone!

Lisa, the Prozac is to help calm her down. She has high levels of anxiety. She marks constantly with her face. The vet says that's most likely to comfort herself. She meows frantically when she's "alone" like in another room without me. When Marley is near, her breathing quickens and she becomes very alert and will excessively groom her front paws or belly. SO, she's just an anxious cat, like me. :lmao: She takes after her momma!

Lisa - April 27, 2007 08:39 PM (GMT)
She does sound anxious, Liz. Poor little thing. Hopefully, the Prozac helps her! :crossed:

msrealdoll - April 28, 2007 12:03 AM (GMT)
Dang, Elizabeth, that sounds like Bella. I never knew those were signs of anxiety, though. I thought she was just a little, well, nutty. She's not the brightest bulb in the pack.user posted image

I'm going to see if I can find a vet around here that has some experience with cat behavior and take Bella in.

Keep us updated on how Sasha does on her Prozac. She didn't get sleepy when you first gave it to her?

 Lucky has been acting like that since Jake has gotten bigger. SHe gets all big eyes when she senses him near. :comfort:
