Title: Oh my Lucky!! Grr!

Allie - June 1, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
:pullhair: I really don't know what we are going to do with her!?!
Lucky has really been getting evil with Jake. She was in the bathroom, and he was across the apartment & she still hissed & growled when she saw him. This morning Jake was minding his own business and Lucky jumped on the couch where he was hissed and swatted, growled. Poor Jake submissively rolled on his back with his ears flat. :( He can't doing anything without Lucky interfering with it. She is on guard all the time, watching & listening for him. She is never relaxed anymore...my parents don't want a cranky cat either.
We are getting really frustrated. I hope thing will change once Jake is fixed in 11 days. :gaah:

Crystal - June 2, 2007 12:37 AM (GMT)
 I hope things get better after he's fixed - hopefully that's what's causing the issue.

Jessica - June 2, 2007 12:38 AM (GMT)
Aww, I really really hope things get better fast! :comfort:

Melanie - June 2, 2007 12:39 AM (GMT)
That sucks. Hopefully Jake's fix will change things though. I have my fingers crossed for you!

Allie - June 2, 2007 06:59 AM (GMT)
 Thanks guys...we're worried and annoyed at the same time. :(

Lisa - June 2, 2007 11:47 AM (GMT)
How frustrating! :( I think it may have a lot to do with Jake not being neutered yet. Lucky "knows" that somehow. I hope things get better when he's fixed! :crossed:

That's how it was at first with Sasha & Marley. She watched him like a hawk. She would chase him away, or off of things for the hell of it. That didn't last too long, maybe 5 or 6 months. It seemed to get progressively worse until the big FIGHT. After her ass-kicking, she backed off, but still chases him now and again. I don't have to put up with the growling and hissing anymore, just random cat fights.

Here is what my vet suggested: Make sure to have 1 cat tree per cat, or at least enough verticle space for the cats. Also, when you catch the bad behavior, isolate the aggressor cat for an hour or so and use squirt bottles. She also said REWARD any positive behavior, like giving them treats when they are near eachother without protest.

If you can, speak with your vet about the behaviors, or see if he/she can refer you to a behaviorist. My vet only charges $150 which includes the consultation and 3 follow-ups. Plus, she will answer questions or concerns I have when they come up. :lmao: I have called and emailed her so many times it's a wonder she just doesn't call me every day to see how things are.

What vets typically do is try to solve the problem before giving meds. But Sasha was an extreme case with high levels of anxiety, so she was immediately medicated. Wow, what a difference!! We've had a few little fights, but I know how to handle them now and get them all calm quickly. But, they can medicate the aggressor, like Sasha. She is on the anti-anxiety med, fluoxetine. Basically, a generic Prozac. OR, the vet can give amitriptyline. I think that's usually given to the victim cat. Makes him less responsive to the aggressor.

If anything, just call the vet for some advice. It's usually free over the phone! :) Good luck.

OH! And make sure they are getting enough play time. My vet said if there isn't enough for them to do, they can take out their frustration and boredom on other cats. 20 or so minutes a day is good. Reward them for playing together, too.

Anytime I see Marley & Sasha near each other, I always pet them and say, "Good kitties!" If I see any signs of stress or anxiety, I place myself between them, but still pet them and talk to them softly. One typically just walks away. Sometimes I pick one up and carry him or her with me out of the area. :)

Cool, thanks Liz. I have noticed when we use the laser pointer that Lucky doesn't get nasty with Jake then.
We have been making sure that when Lucky doesn't hiss or growl that she knows she is a good girl...and when she is bad...oh she know the word bad very well. If she attacks and we can get the water bottle in time we squirt her.
Lately it's just been :coocoo: with her...ripping open the screen to get out THREE times, freaking out on me when I grabbed her come in. :nono: Attacking Jake while he is sleeping. Oh lord...I do hope something gives soon.
Now today they are fine. :wha: As of so far anyhoo.
I wonder if when we move if the change will make things better or worse. From my experience with Milo & Georgie...things got better when we moved from the place I first had Milo alone, which Georgie took over. :wha: so hopefully this will do the same. :praying:

Not to sound discouraging, but I've moved these cats twice and nothing changed for them. :duh: Sasha is a whole lot better. Now I'm just dealing with Marley's brattiness. I don't know what has gotten into that cat!! I think he's just being a young male cat. That's what the vet thinks too. He should grow out of it and settle down, but damnit!! I want it to be NOW!!! :rotfl:

Hey hopefully when Jake is full grown and much bigger than Lucky...he'll give her the beating of her life & she'll back off. :wha:
I was using the fishing wand toy with her & Jake earlier & she only hissed 2 little hisses...but not into playing as much as she nromally would be.

Elizabeth - June 3, 2007 12:47 PM (GMT)
OH!! Have you tried Feliway? It's expensive, but worth it. I use the spray and use it every other day, or when Marley is being a jerk (like yesterday). He had 2 time outs yesterday that bad boy. I swear! He is the brattiest, moodiest cat EVER!!! Want to trade? :rotfl:

Allie - June 3, 2007 09:24 PM (GMT)
Trade :lmao: Mmm I wonder if that would work? :wha: ;)
I will try that if the attacks ever get really violent...for now they have been controllable, but worrisome. I haven't had a cat that was like this before. :coocoo:

Allie, I posted some info here: http://z8.invisionfree.com/Top_Cats/index.php?showtopic=2834. I forgot it was in the photos thread and I freaked out wondering where on earth I posted the info!!! :rotfl:

Just a thought... have you ever hissed back? I don't mean hissing like a snake, I mean hissing like a cat. I started doing that with Maggie and her kittens, and it worked like magic! They understood that it meant the same coming from me as it would from another cat.

Depending on context, volume, and tone, a hiss can mean "stop," "leave me alone," "go away," "that's MINE!" or STOP IT/GET LOST RIGHT NOW, YOU LITTLE ##$^$#^!!!*"

Of course, some cats' reactions when you hiss at them is either to ignore you completely, or else they think you've gone insane... then they ignore you. :wha:
