Title: Long-haired calicos are rare?

Crystal - August 27, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
A woman told my mom that long-haired calicos like Nala are rare. I've been all over the internet because I haven't heard that - and all I've found that male calicos are rare.

Anyone know?

I don't know how true that is - I've certainly seen lots of long haired calicos!

But yes, male calicos are extremely rare.

I've never heard that, either. Many long hair breeds have calico markings. But yes, the males are rare. They're typically sterile, too. One of JJ's cat show friends has a male calico. I got to see him once.

Yep, exactly. It has to do with the genetics of HOW the male got to be a calico. They have an extra X chromosome, making them sterile.

I read somewhere today that like 99.5% of the males are sterile.

Male calicos are rare, longhaired female calicos are not. ;)

Thanks for the final word, JJ. I was doubtful when I heard that.

I knew that males are kinda rare. Like one time I was on this pet game and I was trying to get male calico out of the adoption center, but I kept getting female ones! The female ones acted drunk..... :rotfl:
