Title: Sparkle has an eye infection

Sarah_Pussycat - August 28, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
One of Sparkle's eyes has gone all yukky and gunky
So far I've been bathing it with slightly warm water, but I think he might need something from the vet so I'm going to book him in as soon as possible.
It's times like this I wish I knew someone with a car so I could take him and New Kitty at the same time!
My new baby is eating OK now and seems to be settling in a bit, so I think I'll let Sparkle jump the queue as his eye looks nasty.......

Has anyone else had any experience with eye infections? (In cats that is - I had conjunctivitis myself once but I still have no idea what to do for Sparkle until I can get him an appointment!)

Well I managed to get an appointment for him after work - the vet said eye infections are quite common in white cats, as the lack of pigment around the eyelid makes the area really sensitive.

He's had an antibiotic injection and an anti-inflammatory injection - he didn't like it one bit and the vet didn't believe when I said he's normally a big softie!

I also have some ointment to put on twice a day - hopefully it'll be a bit easier now he's at home and has calmed down a bit!

I hope his eye gets better soon!! I've never had a kitty with an eye infection before.

 Sarah....

Andy had 'something' once....I was afraid about herpes, cause you can't get rid of that, but was able to put antibiotics in his eye for a week or so, and it went away and (knock wood) hasn't come back!

Hugs to Sparkle! :smooch:

Sparkle's eye is looking a lot better already - it looked really nasty yesterday, all swollen and gunky - but now he just has a bit of old gunk left round the edge! He let me put the ointment in this morning with only a bit of struggling, but I need to wipe some of the gunk off before I give him his next lot, and he HATES that!

Wish me luck!

How is the eye? Hope it is improving

It's looking a lot better today!

A word of advice - hold on to your ointment. Eye infections can spread between cats and you may have to use it on the others as well. Also it can reoccuring, too - we have eye issues here all the time. I only take them into the vet if it gets bad - normally a day or two of ointment and it goes away.

Sparkle's eye is nearly back to normal now!

Don't think there'll be any ointment left for me to hold on to though! Luckily it doesn't seem to have spread to the other kitties, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't come back.
