Title: Build-up on long-haired cats skin
Description: *UPDATED: went to the vet*

Crystal - December 2, 2007 04:16 PM (GMT)
We have two medium-haired cats and I've always noticed a bit of build-up on their skin in parts - it'll scab up and I put first aid ointment on them to help them heal.

Nala started out having a few but now they're all over her back. I'm going to give her a bath but does anyone know anything about preventing this?

If no one has any suggestions here, I think I'm going to take her into the vet. I know it itches her, I don't want her uncomfortable.

Best to have a vet look at it, could be an allergy of some kind. One of my cats broke out with this once and the vet gave her a pill to take for two weeks. She thought it was an allergic reaction to something. The only thing I could relate it to was a new litter I had just bought at the same time. It cleared up in about 5 days and I quit buying that litter. The symptoms never returned.

I'll go with Jeff on that one... I would ask my vet...

Last night I felt even more on her so I'm definitely making that appointment. Especially because no one here has experience either.

Yep, I think the vet is a good idea. I've never had a long haired cat so I haven't any idea about it.

Interesting! Jones & Sasha are medium haired and never had any build-up. Are they like sores? Is there hair loss?

Have they seen the vet yet? I'm quite curious what it is!!

No, I'll be making a vet appointment for this week, last week was just too busy.

Some of it is build-up, not sure what because I can't really see it through the hair. But a lot of it is little scabs then I end up pulling off when they're ready. Trixie gets them once in a while on the side that has the missing leg because she can't groom herself properly, and Nala has gotten small ones around where her collar sits. She had minor build-up on her butt above her tail at first, I figured it was the same stuff. But now it's all the way up her back.

It can't be from the other cats playing with her because she's very shy and timid and doesn't wrestle with the others.

We just started her on a powder supplement with her food a bit over a month back for her kidneys, and this has flared up just recently so I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.

I'll definitely update this when we go to the vet this week.

Yep, please do! Poor thing. :comfort:

See, and that's what gets me. It doesn't seem to even bother her. When I start scratching at them and taking care of them, you can tell they itch her - but she doesn't overly itch, lick, or anything. :wha:

The only reason I noticed it was because I brush the cats at night while watching tv in the bedroom.

Well I had our vet appointment today and it turns out it's a skin allergies. It all looked like the little scabs they get when something irritating them (like the collar or lack of cleaning, like I said earlier) so that's why I was confused. He said it's common and knew it right away when he saw it.

Due to her kidney issues, Nala didn't get the regular treatment. Instead she got two shots (benadryl and flocillin) and she's now on (2) 1/2 pills once a day (cefpodoxime and chlorpheniramine). After it clears up we'll see if it develops again - if that's the case, we need to evaluate what's going on. But he said that around the holidays when things are moved out of storage areas, this tends to be more of a common issue. I'm not decorating for the holidays but I've been bringing down stuff from the attic for the deployment boxes so that may be what is going on. Also, my sister just made Erik a fleece blanket and she had been storing the fleece. So I'll eliminate both from the main floor of the house and we'll see what happens.

Glad it got figured out! I hope this is only temporary and it goes away. We've actually had a lot of dogs come in not too long ago with little bumps. So, I guess it is common!
