We're beginning to wonder if Tommy has Ragdoll in him. I was looking at this webpage
http://www.fanciers.com/breed-faqs/ragdoll-faq.htmlwhere it describes the typical Ragdoll and its physical and behavioral characteristics. I'll go through some of it and comment on what we think.
QUOTE
Ragdolls are large, heavy cats, with broad chests and large hindquarters.
We've noticed that Tommy has gotten larger over the last few months, even though he's going to be 2 in February. All our other cats stayed pretty much the same size once they hit a year old... but Tommy seems to still be growing. At first we thought he'd gotten fatter or just fluffier  but his actual BODY is getting larger, and his fur is still getting longer. His hindquarters are SUPER fluffy; you can't even see his butt for all the fur. :lmao:
Then we read this:
QUOTE
They are slow-maturing, and do not reach full maturity until approximately three years of age. Males weigh an average of 12-20 pounds as adults, although some may grow to be larger.
And it made us wonder, with the observation we had on his increasing size.
QUOTE
A "mitted" has dark points and lighter body like a colorpoint, but also has white "mitts" on the front paws, white "boots" on the back legs and feet, a white chin, a white strip on the stomach, and a white ruff.
I quoted this because Tommy's got those "mitts" on his front paws and those "boots" on his hind legs/feet. When we first got him, I commented that he was wearing ankle socks on his front and knee socks on his back.
QUOTE
Ragdolls are extremely "laid-back," docile, non-aggressive cats. They tend to relax when held. They are said to possess a non-fighting instinct, which means that if attacked, they do not defend themselves. They are very "people" oriented and love to be around others, which often finds them greeting guests and/or following their owners around in a fashion similar to a puppy. Ragdolls are generally placid cats, but they do love to play with all types of toys and like to be involved in whatever "action" is going on.
Totally fits Tommy to a T. He's SUPER friendly, loves to be around everyone, is ALWAYS needing to be where we are (or the action is) and he's just a big friendly loverboy. I call him a "friend for life" because of his calm and friendly disposition. He doesn't want to fight with anyone, all he wants to do is play.
QUOTE
They do not shed excessively, and need little care to keep their coats in good condition. Their soft, rabbit-like fur does not tend to mat.
Many people (myself and my cousin included) have commented on the feel of Tommy's fur. It's super-super soft and when I read "rabbit-like fur" it made me think of him! And he doesn't shed much, either. Additionally, his fur never mats. Not even the really long fur near his butt.
Anyway, we're starting to wonder if maybe Tommy is part Ragdoll for those and other reasons. Not a pure, for sure, but maybe one of his parents or grandparents were? At first we thought Maine Coone, but the more I read about Ragdolls, the more I think it's that breed. He's got the huge butt, thick legs, big body, long fur, mitts, toe tufts, fluffy white chest, he's super friendly, laid-back, loves being in on the action, he's got a white strip on his tummy, white chin, chest with extra fluffy fur, etc. etc. and the more I read about that breed, the more it describes him, typically.
JJ, what do you think?
Here are some Tommy pics, to pretty up this post! :luv1:
He ALWAYS lays around the house like this: :lmao:
