Title: Eating litter?

Sarah_Pussycat - February 15, 2008 08:45 PM (GMT)
I'm posting this on behalf of a work colleague - I'm normally the cat guru around these parts, but this one has me stumped!

(I regularly get people coming up to me and asking about what they should do about stuff affecting their cats!)

My work colleague's cat has started eating litter! I asked her if she's changed the litter recently, and she has - but only to see if the cat would stop eating it! At the moment she's just using newspaper, and as that seems a bit yukky to me I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has any suggestions......

She's using cheap litter at the moment, the stuff that looks like gravel and doesn't clump, then turns to mush when it's been used.

Has anyone come across this before? WHY would a cat be eating litter? :wha:

That is odd. I don't have any suggestions. Usually when a cat eats something different, its because they are lacking something in their diet. But I can't see gravel being missing from the diet!! Maybe she's just an odd cat? :rotfl: Maybe your colleague could try the clumping litter. Is the cat young? Maybe teething?

Sarah, I'm the local cat expert, too...I can't imagine why...

I would say change to something that's more like litter. My cats LOVE eating paper and anything like paper. I'm sure it's just a fun texture for them. Tell her to try sand or crystals (I prefer the crystals, they smell better) and see what happens.

This could be a sign of anemia, I would tell her to discuss this with her vet

Today has been the first time I've seen the work colleague in question this week - so I asked her how the cat was getting on.

She told me he went to the Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday - they're having a funeral for him tomorrow :bawling:

They're not sure what was wrong, she just found him lying on the sofa on Tuesday morning, close to the end. He was 16 - so not a young cat. He must have been feeling a bit off for a couple of weeks, hence the litter eating. :(
