Title: We're taking in another special needs kitten...
Crystal - September 30, 2008 06:40 PM (GMT)
So I had to post on Craigslist for one of our properties today and I happened over to the pet section (which I only do once in a great while). Well an ad caught my eye about a special needs kitten and I ended up emailing the woman for more information...I talked to her vet...and we'll be going tomorrow to pick her up!
She's about 2 weeks old and weighs 1 lb. :luv2: That's the exact size Tinkerbell was when we found her. They're saying she's a Siamese/Tortie mix...I'm not sure what I'll be looking at! The woman found her litter and she was the only one who survived. She has pretty bad eyes, though, and one is going to need to be removed - but talking to the vet, she thinks this kitten is in the same situation Willy was with the feline herpes issue.
The woman doesn't think she can care for it - she has other dogs and cats, and her son is coming to stay with her for a while and he has a large family - she'll have no room and no time. So we'll be taking her in and seeing what we can do.
Edited: We're waiting to find out if she's FELV/FIV negative first - waiting to hear on when they can test her.

Aw congrats, Crystal! I can't wait to see photos of the little baby!

:jump: :jump: :jump: Wonderful news... I can't wait to see the pictures... That's a wonderful gift for Erik's homecoming ... :biggrinny: If she has siamese in her you're in for a big treat... ;)
Crystal - October 1, 2008 05:49 PM (GMT)
:D I'm so excited to meet her - I don't have any pictures of her or anything at all. I'm going crazy! 4:00 can't come fast enough...I've had butterflies in my stomach since getting the email this morning that she tested negative.

We picked her up last night and we're in love. :D
The lady we got her from actually breeds Siamese and Snowshoe cats. They were soooo gorgeous! She had to find a home for our little girl, though, because she just doesn't have time and money for all of what she'll need - and oh my was she right! There were two dogs and five people in the house, and there's supposed to be five more coming and it was crazy! (Her son and is family is coming to live with her, and I know her mom was there, too)
The litter that our little girl came from was found in the yard in one of her relatives - I can't remember who she said it was, though. She had bad eye issues and one ruptured and needs to be removed, but the other looks JUST like the issue Willy had (Feline Herpes)! It's glazed over and the third eyelid is out too far - so when she has surgery to get the one eye removed, I'm going to have our vet cut back the eyelid like he did on Willy (who has an eye that is almost perfect now). I know she'll be on meds and ointment for a while, too, but hopefully since we're starting early with her we'll have the same success we did Willy.
She is a Siamese kitty with a bit of Tortie mixed in - her feet are mottled like a Tortie and she has a little white smudge on her face under her nose. She's going to be a beautiful cat.
I took her to bed with me last night and she slept all night in bed on my pillow with me. It was cute because I was reading and she was on my chest, and then she ended up rolling over my neck to last next to my head. I got up to go to the bathroom before bed and came back and she was on my nightstand. I turned out the light and she decided she wanted to jump down, so she came onto the bed and made her way down the blanket (she grabs it with her little claws), and then a minute later I heard her climbing back up. She got to the top and ran to me and snuggled up and went to sleep. :luv2:
Below are links to the pictures - WARNING: if you're squeemish, you may not want to look at them, her ruptured eye is pretty gross.
We have a vet appointment tomorrow morning for her so I'll know what our course of treatment will be and how soon everything will happen. I'll update everyone tomorrow.
Our beautiful little babyHer first mealHer favorite new spot in the living room, the toy corner - she fell asleep on a puff ballAnd her other favorite place to lay in the living room

:luv2: :luv2: :luv2: :luv2: :luv2: Awwwww.... poor little baby... it hurts my heart to see her like that... I hope she's not in too much pain... she is gorgeous... she looks to me like a siamese tortie point... they have the reputation of having very stong caracters so i'm sure it will help her in her recovery and to lead a normal life after that... she's very lucky to have found you and Erik, I'm sure you will give her all the good care and the love she deserves... does she have a name yet? give her a big kiss for me... :smooch:
Crystal - October 2, 2008 03:45 PM (GMT)
Nope, no name yet. I have a few.
And that's what the breeder said, a seal-point Siamese. I'm new to Siamese so I'm learning.
She reminds me of the pictures you posted of Sundae - they have similar coloring.
I'm so anxious for our vet appointment tomorrow to start planning on how to get her fixed up. I have a very good idea of what we need to do but I want to talk to our vet to get the timing. She doesn't seem to be in any pain at all, she acts like a normal little kitten.

Yep, she looks like a Tortie Seal Point... she's more like Pixelle but Pixelle is a solid and not a Tortie...
Pixelle at 4 weeks (she still had her baby stripes)

and at 6 weeks

Seal point is the color of the point (dark brown) and Tortie is the pattern of the color... ;)
estelle58 - October 2, 2008 04:34 PM (GMT)
This is Rosaline, Pixelle's big sister, she's a Seal Tortie Points, your beautiful baby will propbably look a lot like her when she will be older... :luv1:
Crystal - October 2, 2008 06:05 PM (GMT)
Ooh, wow! Yup, I just confirmed with the lady that she's a Tortie Seal Point.
Crystal - October 2, 2008 06:29 PM (GMT)
I was just talking to the vet who saw her because I wanted to get a copy of her records for tomorrow's visit. Well this vet told me the lady I got her from notified her that a kitten she sold a few weeks back had died of something (something with a "c"...blah, I don't remember now!) and that it was extremely fatal. Then she told me that she advised this woman to stop breeding. Ugh, who even knows this situation, I'm just so glad I got her out of it.
And now I guess she's 8 weeks, not 2 weeks old? :wha: I'm just going to talk to my vet tomorrow.

Yes, that's what her paws look like! Wow, it's so neat to see a grownup. I can't wait to see how she looks, how neat. I've always wanted a Siamese...I knew she was part when we looked into taking her but I didn't know she was a full Siamese until we got there.

That's what I was also thinking... there's no way that baby is 2 weeks old... she's more around 6 weeks old, give or take a week...
Crystal - October 2, 2008 06:58 PM (GMT)
When we took Tink in she was about 2 months old and much more alien-like looking - like kittens when they're first born. I was wondering so that's why I asked and found it was definitely off.
estelle58 - October 2, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
That's a picture of Sundae when she was 10 days old...

and there she is at 4 weeks...

and at 6 weeks...

your precious little baby looks much more like the third picture... :)
Crystal - October 2, 2008 07:35 PM (GMT)
Ooh, neat!! I think it's so cool to watch the colors grow in on breeds. Even Tigger outside, when I first met him I called him "Mr. Gray" because he was all gray - and now he's much more of a brown with more pronounced areas around his body.
estelle58 - October 2, 2008 07:48 PM (GMT)
Well, it's normal because I think Tigger has some Siamese genes in him... ;)
Sarah_Pussycat - October 2, 2008 09:15 PM (GMT)
Crystal - she's GORGEOUS! (apart from the dodgy eye obviously!) Sounds like she's a lovely little new friend too! (I WANT A SIAMESE!!!!!OR TWO!!!!!!) :luv1: :kittyluv:
Estelle, when can I come and catnap Sundae? :)
Crystal - October 3, 2008 11:56 AM (GMT)
:rotfl: Sarah.
And yes, Estelle, I agree about Tigger. That's why I named him that - Tiggers are made up of a bunch of things and I think he has about 50 breeds him in. :)
I'm really kind of angry right now because the more I find out about this situation, the more I feel we were lied to.
We both thought it was weird when we pulled up to the lady's house and there was a hand-made sign outside that said "Siamese and Snowshoe kittens for sale." In the Craigslist ad, she had said that all the others in the litter died. Then we went inside and she had a cat room where she was breeding a few cats, and a bunch of kittens running around. Kittens that looked just like ours.
Then she just flat out told me she's a pure Siamese Tortie. Really? You breed Siamese cats in here and you just happened to find a litter of pure kittens out in someone's backyard?
Then I was talking to her vet yesterday and she told me that she had been told by the woman that another kitten that had been adopted out died of the Feline Herpes virus along with something else she caught. Was this the second Craigslist ad posted like this? Luckily the vet told me just watch for flu-like symptoms, it should hit her pretty hard - and she said if she doesn't have it by now, she probably won't have it. So I think we're in the clear.
But then I'm reading the vet's records she faxed me and the woman had taken this kitten to the vet for the FIRST time the day she posted the ad (a few days ago) - but claims to have found her THREE WEEKS prior to that. An eye like that doesn't just happen overnight.
The vet flat out told me that she informed this woman she needs to stop breeding. That right there tells me that this was not a found kitten, but a mistake.
With all of that being said, I'm pissed off I gave her money to "reimburse" her for medical costs, but I'm so thankful we got her out of that situation. We're going to make sure she gets the attention she needs so she can lead a full life. She's such a sweetie, we're in love with her.
Does anyone know how to report this woman? She very much seems like a backyard breeder and an irresponsible one at that.
Crystal - October 3, 2008 04:46 PM (GMT)
Alright, well we just got back from the vet.
Dr. T agreed with my suspicions about being lied to - and I feel better about it now, whatever, I'm so glad we got her out of that situation.
He put her on the same vigorous treatment we had Willy on because she's suffering from the same thing. It was funny, before the appointment I told Erik what I thought we'd end up doing and it was the exact thing - I love my vet. :D So we're starting all of that today and next Friday I'm going back for a follow-up and we'll probably start her vaccines at that point. If all looks good next Friday, we'll set up an appointment the following week or so for surgery and he'll remove the ruptured eye (which is looking even worse today, pussing and all) and fix the third eyelid on the other eye. And then we'll continue with the same treatment we had Willy on and pray it works as well for her as it did for him.
At the vet, this is how she was sitting on us - Tinkerbell used to do the exact same thing when she was a kitten (and she was about the same size). Our vet at the time called her our little parrot.
Aleigh - October 3, 2008 05:44 PM (GMT)
Aww Crystal, what a sweetie. I am so glad you got her out of that situation.
I know you live by me.. Do you live in Cuyahoga or Lorain County? I bet you could contact a shelter and htey should know someone eho you can report this lady to.
Elizabeth - October 3, 2008 06:06 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure how you report a breeder. It's not really regulated, is it? I've watched too many Animal Cops shows with the puppy mills, etc. :( Anyway! At least she has a WONDERFUL home now! Hope she gets better soon and her eye can get removed.
estelle58 - October 3, 2008 06:09 PM (GMT)
Did the vet told you how old she is?
Crystal - October 3, 2008 06:12 PM (GMT)
I'm in Cuyahoga - specifically Garfield Heights. I can call the APL we adopted some of our kitties from.
Crystal - October 3, 2008 06:31 PM (GMT)
Ah, we didn't discuss that! The woman I adopted her from said 8 weeks, that vet guessed 5 weeks, and I'll have to ask Dr. T for his guess - I'm guessing the vet was right, though.
Crystal - October 6, 2008 12:25 PM (GMT)
We named her yesterday - Peanut!
I was walking above her and she waddles around like a little peanut...and she's just so darn cute. So it'll be a nice name that will fit her now and later.
And it could fit into our movie theme - Peanuts is a comic strip and tv show. :rotfl:
Yesterday we got to spend most of the day at home with the kitties. We had the windows open and everyone was up watching the birds, and I put her up with them and she was watching them. We also caught her chowing down on dry food - I've been offering it to her since she got here and she didn't want it, and then suddenly started eating it. She's getting more adventurous, exploring new areas.
I have pictures I'll share later after I upload them.

Lisa - October 6, 2008 02:35 PM (GMT)
She's beautiful! :luv1:
Crystal, I agree with trying to Cleveland APL. Irresponsible breeders! I'm glad you got her out of there!
Silver deer - October 8, 2008 01:24 AM (GMT)
Sounds like you were lied to, Crystal. :( It sucks... sounds like the lady isn't a very good breeder, but at least you got Peanut out of a bad situation. I'm sure she'll do much better in your care. (And she is gorgeous by the way!)
Hope you find a way to report the breeder... keep us updated!
Crystal - October 8, 2008 01:54 PM (GMT)
Peanut is settling in well. We take her to bed with us every night and she sleeps through the night with us (better, I think, because I don't want her bumping into things with that eye how it is) and loves to snuggle. The other cats have gotten used to her and there's no more hissing - it's so cute how everyone looks out for her and takes care of her. She's starting to explore more and more, except for the tile in the kitchen, which she seems scared of...which is fine, because there's some places in there I don't want her going anyway.
When we walk into the house she comes and greets us with the other cats, and she knows when meal time is as well - she starts licking her lips as soon as I open a can.
She's currently on three different types of medication right now - ointment for her eyes, and two types of oral meds (one liquid that she's not too fond of and a gel I mix in her food). As I think I stated before, it's the same treatment we had Willy on and he looks gorgeous now, almost perfect (
see my most current picture of him). I've already started to see improvement in the eye she has left, which is absolutely wonderful.
I took some pictures this past weekend and thought I'd put them up here for everyone to see.
Peanut discovering and playing on the scratching post.

We didn't think she was eating anything but wet food...well, I discovered that we were wrong. Here's the first time I saw her eating dry food.

I was sitting by the window with the cats, watching the birds...despite Peanut's eye issues, she can see pretty well and was watching the birds for the first time.

Then I put her down on the window sill to explore.

Tink kept trying to grab at her and I caught this one where she finally got her head. :lmao:

She's so silly because she likes to hold onto things (our chest, things she's sitting on) with her front paws and let the back paws just dangle.

Later she found the sunlight with Jazmine (this patch and another patch in the other room is where all the cats can be found passed out in during the day) and she ended up sleeping here with Jaz for a while.
Crystal - October 8, 2008 01:55 PM (GMT)
I'm also looking into reporting the breeder - I've been crazy busy at work and with planning my dad's birthday stuff and haven't had a spare moment.
estelle58 - October 9, 2008 02:37 PM (GMT)
:luv2: She looks very happy and healthy (apart from her obvious problems)... the pictures really show that she is surrounded by love... :luv1:
If you want to give her a special treat you could give her Royal Canin dry food for babies, it could help boost her immune system and give her extra nutrients... as for the taste, my girls absolutely adored it...
Crystal - October 9, 2008 02:44 PM (GMT)
Ooh, I'll have to try that. She's a huge eater, I gave the others tuna yesterday while she was in the other room eating her wet food - a few minutes later I found her in there with them, chowing down. She eats and poops more than I've ever seen a kitten do!
That's actually really good, though, because when she hits 2 lbs. we can do the surgery - she had gained 1/4 of a pound in the first 3 days she moved in with us (was the lady not feeding her or something? :wha: ) and I'm sure she's gained more since then. I have her vet appt. tomorrow morning to we'll find out.
