They're purty!!! How can you tell the difference from female and male?
Allie - January 29, 2009 11:36 PM (GMT)
First of all female get a little white dot by their anus..it's where the eggs come out. Males don't have this trait usually. But at 9.5 weeks it's really hard to tell.
Other clues are males bottom fins are longer, prettier and have a different body shape...they seem more elongated. Female look stubbier. Mostly the way they act. Males have a strut to them. :rotfl:
The yellow pink #5 is a definate boy..I put the mirror up and he flared instantly. So adorable.

They look so sad. Once my mom and I were there and there were no hole poked in the lid and many had died!! We complained to the manager. He didn't care. Poor fishies.
Yours seem to have various colors than what I'm used to seeing! I only see red ones and blue ones. Well, maybe when yours grow up they'll be those colors. Or can they be different? You have a green one and a purple-y looking one. Will they stay those colors?

It's b/c they can breath air, labyrinth fish have a labyrinth organ which they breathe air with. The can stay in crappier conditions than most fish, not withother adverse effects tho. I wouldn't keep them in anything less than a 3g tank with heater and a low flow filter. :pullhair:

Betta fish aren't high priority fish in the business world...b/c most have to be kept alone. :(
Mine are half moon tails, their parents were from two different spawns. With a varied background in colors. I wanted to see all the different colors that could come out of these two. Betta genetics is very confusing...I really have little understanding.
Even if the parents look the same you may not get all the same looking babies. Betta come ina ll kinds of colors...check out this site

Thanks all.
If females they develop their breeding tube: the little white dot by their anus. Male you don't see this unless they are too fat in the tummy area for one reason or another. Males fins grow longer ;)
The do act differently when in aggressive mode. Males like to strut...females just attack or chase.

When they sell them in pet stores they usually have their long fins by then, if they are males. Females are cheaper too.
Females are the cutest little bossy things. Much more personality than males.
Thanks Estelle.
