Title: Tips on giving meds....

Allie - March 14, 2009 05:19 PM (GMT)
I am having trouble getting Milo to take his meds today. One is pill form the other 2 are powdered form.
I put them in his favorite wet food with some water. He won't eat it.
I was thinking on using a syringe with water and the powered meds. I can put a piece of air line tubing (disinfected first) on the end of the syringe to make it longer and put it closer to the throat. Milo isn't huge people food fan so I don't know what else to do.
He needs meds daily.
Anyone have tips they care to share (Crystal?)

The only way I could pill my cats was using this method:

Holding the cat on the floor, I got on my knees and hovered over the cat, gently squeezing him/her between my legs and lightly sitting on them. Took m y left hand and grabbed the jaw from underneath and used my thumb & first finger to gently pry the jaw open and with the pill ready in my right, I crammed it as far back as I could. Then tapped the nose a few times so they lick their nose (and swallow).

I was reading you can buy gel capsules to fill with your meds from a local pharmacy. A lot of times it's the taste of the pill that cats hate (among many other reasons they hate pills). Then maybe it will be easier to shove in their throats because it's tasteless.

Pill Pockets are good if he like treats. Jones & Sasha didn't. You hide the meds in the pocket.

A pill gun can work, but you may have to use the above method of "sitting" on him. No weight is bared on the cat, so don't worry about hurting him.

You can also find a compounding pharmacy. It cost more, but they can flavor it. I used to compound Jones' asthma meds. It cost $30/month. But it was chicken flavor and I mixed it with canned food. He loved it. BUT, I was watching the Dr.s on TV and they were saying something about compounding may contain cheap ingredients purchased online (and not regulated). It depends on the pharmacy. And since cat meds are the same as human meds pretty much, I'd think they are subject to the ingredients that could be bad. But I dunno!! Canada may be different. I'd never go through on online compounding pharmacy, though!

Anyway, good luck!! I bet Crystal has some good pointers.

Oh yeah!! Lots of pets & treats right afterwards!! I always had treats ready (Greenies are all they eat) so as SOON as I was finished, they had the reward. I do this during nail trims, too.

Haha, me again. The syringe sounds like a good idea, too. Can you crush the pill and do that? And can he take them all at once? Mix it with some wet food juice (if you can drain it), or broth or something tasty... To a cat anyway. And use as little liquid as possible so he won't choke and so you can do it in one or 2 squirts.

Syringe didn't work with Sasha when she took some allergy meds. She hated it!! But she had to take a FULL syringe, so it took multiple squirts.

Thanks Liz. I was thinking on the pill pockets...as Milo loves Greenies brand treats.
Could I put the powdered meds in them too? Today is going to have to be the torture method, holding down gently. I will try everything to get him to take his meds.
Right now he is sleeping so I'll wait until later.
Yeah I give them treats after they get clipped too.

 The chicken broth is a good idea.

I'm sure you can use the powder in the pill pockets. Maybe mix it with a tiny tiny bit of wet food, so when he bites it, powder doesn't spill out.

Marley was the WORST at pilling. :ack: That was a total nightmare...

:jump: The syringe works great! He cooperated until the other 3 cats came into see what was going on. lol
Tomorrow I will use less water...this time was too much. He puked up water. Oops! I will give him half the amount of water next dose. He ate the other cats' food & kept that down afterward tho.
I am still looking for other ways to give him meds. Anyone else got any creative ideas on how to give a cat meds? One who doesn't like much food other than treats?
Just read on this site that some cats will eat food mixed with cat nip. Wet, food meds and cat nip, may work too.
