My mother took in a stray about 4 to 5 weeks ago. Now the cat that her and her husband already have was fit to be tied. She has been peeing and pooping all over the place. She is in perfect health as a couple trips to the vet confirmed that. So today when she went to get her rabies booster, the vet gave my mom some tablets of 10mg Elavil (an antidepressant of sorts) to try to calm her down.
My question to anybody here is have they used Elavil to treat a cat that was messing out of spite and if so, how good of results did you attain? I thank you in advance.
I'm having a similar issue with Nala, but she goes in the same spot. I'm interested to hear what anyone has to share.
Well, both Sasha & Marley (when I had him) were on clomipramine (another anti-depressant) for their hostile behavior towards one another. They weren't inappropriately eliminating, so I don't know how much help this will be!!
But after a few weeks the hostility did subside. Tension was still there, but the fights had stopped. So maybe after a few weeks, your mom's cat will end the behavior, or at least do it infrequently. But with any anti-depressant, sometimes the dosage has to be fiddled with. We started on the lowest, but then had to adjust it to try and get it right. Just like with humans.
Sadly, it did not work for us long-term and that's when we had to rehome Marley. I wish you the best of luck, though!
