Title: My baby Figaro
Crystal - May 18, 2009 04:49 PM (GMT)
Mr. Figaro has lost a lot of weight recently - like in the last few months. I first noticed it a few months back right before spring hit, and it seems like he's lost a little more, too. He was a fatty before, a round, solid cat, and now he's down to a smaller size. The thing that's bothering me is that his shoulders and hips are more pronounced than I feel they should be.
I could be horribly overreacting - when we first got him he was thinner, then he gained weight, and now it looks like he lost it - but I don't remember just how thin he was before to compare. I'm also not sure of the exact weight loss, I want to get him weighed there, but I would say it's almost 5 pounds easily.
He's acting the same, no change in diet or behavior.
It's probably nothing...but I want to get my vet's opinion.

Keep us posted!! I hope all is well with him.

Yes! Please get to the vet. Thats how it started with my Mittens. I didnt worry until She was also not eating alot and just laying around. By then it was too late. There was probably nothing the Dr. could have done anyway. :(
Crystal - May 18, 2009 07:38 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I was talking to my sister today and she said she'd definitely get him checked because she noticed the weight loss, too - it's happened over about a period of 3-6 months so it may be nothing...but we'd rather know if there's any issues, especially with his past issues with pancreatitis, stemming from the issue with his teeth when we first got him (they were literally rotting in his mouth, and that caused the pancreatitis a few months later).

I hope he will be allright... :comfort: does he play a lot with the kittens? if he is more active it could also play a part in his weight loss...
Crystal - May 19, 2009 05:55 PM (GMT)
He does play a lot with the kitten and other cats. And he has some sort of OCD (which I'm also going to ask the vet about) - he does laps around the center part of the house. We've counted him doing over 20 at a time. If you get in his way, he'll just go around you and keep going. They seem to be based around me - if I sit down, he'll stop and sit with me. But we think it started as he was waiting for me in the kitchen and bathroom at different times of day.

And now because of an emergency at work, I can't break away today and had to reschedule Fig's appointment - and the next opening is NEXT Friday!!

Last night I noticed Fig looked horrible - his third eyelids were slightly out and his eyes just looked bad - watery, hazy. He also had diarrhea (not sure if this is because of our food change, though...everyone's had it due to the abrupt change). He's been eating and drinking fine, and he hasn't been horribly lethargic. But I called first thing this morning and the receptionist fit me in this morning.
Fig's lost a bit over 3 pounds and he's dehydrated. :( They're keeping him for tests right now.
I'm really worried...this weight loss has come over a few months so he's not just sick with a cold. Something's wrong. :(
Jessica - May 27, 2009 02:52 PM (GMT)
:( Crystal, I am keeping my fingers crossed that nothing is seriously wrong with Figaro. :comfort:  Poor dude.
Crystal - May 27, 2009 06:00 PM (GMT)
Thanks Jess.
All Figaro's bloodwork came back normal. :jump:
He's just being treated for dehydration and an infection right now, and he's good to go whenever I want to get him (I can leave at 4:00 when I close up the store to pick him up).
I'm going to take a stool sample up there for them to test as well - Callie is being treated for a worm (can't remember which) and she said Fig may have caught it. I'm going to check anyone that's having diarrhea in a few days...it's hard to tell right now, they're all upset a bit about the sudden food change.
Oh man I am so relieved! I've been worried about his weight for weeks, and last night I was just laying with him, crying...he and I have such a close bond, he's my baby.
Thank you everyone for your good thoughts.

 Thank goodness. I KNOW how you feel. :comfort:
I was worried you were gonna end up with another CRF kitty.

I can't tell you how scared I was - with the Nutro recall, and the fact that he got really bad this past week...ugh!!
I was thinking, "Well if this happens like Nala's situation...I at least know what I'm doing!" :lmao:

FANTASTIC news. I'm so happy for you all. YAY Figs! Can I call him Figs? LOL :jump: :luv2:
Crystal - May 31, 2009 09:19 PM (GMT)
We're not out of the woods yet.
Yesterday Fig still looked dehydrated so I called the vet, and she had me administer some of Nala's fluids to him. I woke up this morning to find that he had poo'ed a bit in bed (he's had diarrhea and I've noticed he has a bit of a time controlling it) and I had laid in it. He's looking a bit better today, but the diarrhea is still there. I need to corner him and get a poo sample to take in.
Aaaand Trixie looks like she's a bit dehydrated, and I'm not sure how her poops are. :wha: I'll be getting a sample from her, too.
The vet said that maybe they had some type of infection - they found something in Callie's poo (need to find out what) that they could have caught...so I'm hoping that's all it is.

 Crap! Err so to speak. Have fun collecting. :lmao:
Hope you can get this under control. :comfort:

He's looking better this morning, but still not where we want him to be - and I couldn't find Trixie so I'm not sure how she's looking. I'm calling the vet when they open at 8:00 to schedule an appointment later in the week for both of them together...that will give them a few days to see how they do.
my3kitties - June 1, 2009 08:12 PM (GMT)
Sending hugs, purrs, and headbonks to Trixie, Figaro and you. Hopefully it's nothing serious and Trix and Fig will be back to their old selves.

Oh no!! Hope your kiddos are ok. Is it giardia maybe? Is the poo all runny? I hope they can find out what little bug is causing all this.

We FINALLY have an answer!
So Fig improved a bit after getting fluids and being on medication, but he still wasn't 100%. He gained half a pound...but nothing substantial.
Then Trixie started to exhibit signs...then Willy...then Peanut...then Tink... :bawling:
I took both Fig and Trixie in yesterday and saw our regular doctor (we had to see the other doctor there when I first took Fig in - he was so bad I didn't care who I saw at that point) and he looked over some stuff, looked at Fig...and then had it.
They all caught the
Giardia parasite Callie came into our home with! :D At first he thought it came in on our shoes...which makes sense because Erik works mostly outside...and then he was describing the treatment and I told him Callie was just set up with that...he looked at her file and linked it back to her.
I'm so happy we finally have an answer. All 9 cats (Callie's already been treated) are on medication for 5 days, once a day. And Fig is on pills on top of that just because of his drastic response to it.
:jump: I love my vet...I'm so relieved!!
estelle58 - June 9, 2009 01:26 PM (GMT)
:jump: :jump: That's wonderful news... My girls were treated for that because Keiko had it and they are all fine... :)
Elizabeth - June 9, 2009 02:18 PM (GMT)
I knew it was giardia. ;) We saw it all the time at the clinic.
Glad they are all being treated and should be done with it! :jump:

First round of medicine last night...I have 9 very unhappy cats and 1 crazy kitten! :rotfl:
My kitchen floor has streaks where I had to clean up some of the spilled medicine...I told Erik to deal with it for 5 more days, I'm not washing the floor to have it happen every day again. :lmao:
