Title: How old is he really??
catlvr4life - January 8, 2010 05:40 PM (GMT)
When I found Butterz i was told he was an 8 week old kitten, which is probably now almost 10 weeks old. I am updating his info on Home Again and for the birth date i have to put in. On his paper work from the shelter they say his birth date is 9/25/09...well that isn't 8 weeks....then said the surrender (of his mom and siblings i assume) was 11/18/09....so I'm really confused on what month his birth date is. He does look like an 8 week old but am no expert. Any experts out there that woudl knwo more then I on how old Butterz could be?
I tend to do birth cakes for the pets when it's their birthday hee hee

Has he been to your vet yet? Your vet looking at his teeth would be the best way to age him. Pictures won't do a lot of good since some cats and kittens look younger or older than they are, but teeth on kittens help give a pretty accurate age guess.

That is definitely true with my Star. He will be 5 years old on June 9, but I have pictures of him where he looks like he's 5 months old.

His teeth were just starting to come in when i got him and now they are fully in, but his two front top big teeth have like two teeth coming in at the same time (i've never seen that before)
I'll have to ask when he sees his vet in a couple weeks. I can't believe they flip flopped his birthday like that though. Very odd.

It seems like that's not a huge concern at most shelters - every cat I've gotten from a shelter I had to get a second opinion on age from my vet.

the "two teeth coming in" might be him losing his baby teeth and starting to get his adult teeth. Kittens start losing their baby teeth around 3-4 months old and have all their adult teeth by 6-9 months old.

Thanks everyone!...it's been a very long time since I had a kitten. I'm just used to an adult cat.

Katie, he could be the runt of the litter. In my litter of kittens, Abby is the runt of the litter and she looks tiny for being 9 months old herself. Pepe on the other hand is the biggest of the 4 and he looks the size of an adult cat. :)

true true. but when i saw butterz brother (the cat i was going to originally get) raggedy andy, he was tiny. so perhaps the mama just had a bad start when she gave birth. but he is healthy and hat is all that matters :o) and kinda glad he is still a kitten size since he is at 6 months. wish all kitty's stayed kitten size
