So many of you know about Tucker and his undying need to get into the ceiling in the basement. He will NOT give up. We have had out landlord put in a door leading to the storage room last year, in hopes that he wouldn't be able to get in the room to jump up on the furnace, etc. to poke around in the ceiling.
Well, he (and Billy) managed to figure out how to open the door. (It's one of the sliding doors... no lock on it.) They get in there all the time.
It turns out, he wasn't getting into the ceiling from that room. He was getting in through the laundry room. He would climb up boxes, etc. and jump into the opening.
WELL - we've hammered cardboard boxes that we've torn up so that they cover those openings... and guess what???
Lastnight, we were sitting in the office, and all of a sudden, we hear a loud BANG come from downstairs.
We went down... to find this:
Now we have to get the landlord (or his father) in here to fix it. I'll be honest, the ceiling was drooping BIG TIME since we moved in - it got worse in time. But Tucker's fat arse walking around in there, putting pressure on it, didn't help matters!!! I hope we don't have to pay for it to be replaced. I'm just glad it didn't happen when I had kids down there!!! Maybe it's a good thing it happened the way it did.

Holy cow, that would scare me to death! Not only is it a pain in the butt to fix, but it's dangerous for them to be crawling around up there!
Jessica, if there are only a couple of rooms they can get into the ceiling from, maybe it would help to put one of these on the doors...
It's a spring latch I tore off of an old hamster cage I didn't need anymore. It's on my bathroom door. My cats are absolutely not allowed in the bathrooms and they figured out how to get the upstairs bathroom door opened. That little spring hook works great, even if the doorknob is not latched at all they can't push the door open with that hook on it. That would even work on a sliding door like you have, I think.
I hope your landlord isn't too upset about that ceiling! Yikes!

Thanks for the idea SEW. The room that he's getting into the ceiling from is the laundry room, and unfortunately it has no door. The other room is the storage room, and my landlord put a door there for us last year. But, it's one of those sliding/folding doors without a lock. Well, I put a loop in the wood and tried tying thick string around the door's handle and securing it to the loop... only to have Tucker paw and pull at the bottom of the door, thus opening it a smidgen near the bottom - and in he went!

Happy update: Our landlord came by today to check it out, and apparently, whoever put the ceiling up did a poor job. He said the staples they used on the tiles were too small - it's no wonder they sagged and eventually popped open. We don't have to pay!
Tucker was snickering in the background, however...

He's just too clever for his own damn good! lol
Sorry he is being a bugger but...I have to laugh when you THINK they can't thru something, yet they find a way to do it.
