I'm beginning to wonder if this is a stray..

There's a black kitty wandering around and I thought it was my neighbor's cat Maui who is an outdoor cat. But today I asked her if Maui was outside last night and she said "No."

I saw a cat run across our deck and nobody that I know of around here other than that one neighbor owns cats, but dogs.

I remember a while back I had seen one and when I tried to approach it darted away..I really want to be able to get close enough to check for collar since it's always dark when the cat is around I can't tell if it's wearing one.

Ideas?

I would like to try and leave animal control out of this for the kitty would just go to the shelter which is terribly full so at most the cat would only have 2 days left to live if that.

And kitty can't run stray like this with coyotes and cars at it's fullest out here

If you think it's stray, I would start putting food out somewhere around a window so you can get a better look.

So I put food out and didn't see him anymore. Kinda makes me sad I was hoping he'd come back and I would at least have a little outdoor kitty friend.

Chances are he's someone's cat who they let outdoors. We have a kitty that stops by and hangs out in Tigger's house with him (and gets dinner sometimes) who is named Simba and lives a few doors down.
